Non-urgent advice: Self Certification and Fit Notes

Self‑Certification and Fit Notes

If you are unwell and unable to work, please note the following:

  • First 7 Days of Illness
    • For the first 7 calendar days of sickness, you do not need a GP fit note. However some employers insist on a Doctor’s note regardless. A Doctors note under these circumstances involves a charge of £40.
    • You can complete a self‑certification form (SC2) yourself and provide this to your employer.  Many employers have their own self-certification forms. If your employer doesn’t have its own form you can download the Self Certification Form Please print it, fill it in and hand it in to your employer. You do not need to see a Doctor.
  • Illness Longer Than 7 Days
    • If your sickness lasts more than 7 days, you will need a Fit Note (MED3) from a GP.
    • This can be backdated to the day your initial 7‑day self‑certification period ended, so please don’t worry if you were unable to request it on the exact day.

Thank you for your co-operation.
